SURF 2020

My SURF experience this year was unlike any other. Instead of making the 40 minute commute from Mason to Cincinnati every morning, I completed the whole program from the comfort of my bed. Although I was disappointed that I had no interaction with the members of my lab, I still thought the program did a great job of creating an impactful substitution. The whole program included many seminars, lectures, and networking events hosted by a wide variety of professionals in the healthcare field. Although it was interesting to listen to Physicians some of my favorite speakers were those in careers outside of medicine because I was totally unfamiliar with their routine and work. I also had a strong appreciation for those that discussed diversity and inclusion in healthcare because that's something I'm really passionate about and something I can always grow in.

From this experience, I've realized how committed current healthcare professionals are to educating the younger population. This makes me feel so supported and I'm glad I now have a network of individuals I can reach out to for support. I'm also very excited to apply again next year and hopefully work in person with the amazing people in my lab. Hopefully, I can start going to research in-person again in the Spring!
